About NCIBI
The National Center for Integrative Biomedical Informatics (NCIBI) was founded in October 2005 and is one of seven National Centers for Biomedical Computing (NCBC) in the NIH Roadmap. NCIBI is based at the University of Michigan as a part of the Center for Computational Medicine and Biology (CCMB). The Center develops conceptual models, computational infrastructure, an integrated knowledge repository, and query and analysis tools that enable scientists to effectively access and integrate the wealth of biological data.
About the Meeting
The first day of the 2009 Annual Research Meeting meeting featured a "Try our NCIBI Tools" workshop about NCIBI tools and applications followed by a keynote talk by Gwen Jacobs, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Montana State University.
The second day featured an overview of NCIBI, updates on NCIBI activities from its computational science and Driving Biological Projects cores and new and ongoing initiatives with a focus on the upcoming renewal. The afternoon session entitled, "National interactions to drive translation of bioinformatics into CTSA and CaBIG communities" featured perspectives from NCIBI (Brian Athey), i2B2 (Shawn Murphy), and CaGRID (Joel Saltz) and ended with a closing keynote address by Jill Mesirov, Ph.D., Associate Director and Chief Informatics Officer, Broad Institute. Participants had the opportunity to present posters of their work.

Presentations - Tuesday, April 28th
Workshops:
NCIBI offered a "Try Our Tools" workshop that provided an opportunity for the participants to learn about our applications with guided instruction in 4 separate modules. Tutorial booklets based on realistic hands-on cases were provided. Specialists were available to answer questions about applying our tools to the participants' research. Facilitated by technology advances that NCIBI uses to integrate data from diverse sources and heterogeneous formats, the workshop allowed the participants to explore such questions as:
- What proteins interact and in what pathways?
- What compounds and reactions in a pathway may be associated with a set of genes?
- What interactions may play a mechanistic role in a disease?
- What articles are relevant to given genes, interactions or diseases?
- What genes are significantly enriched for a concept or for the same set of concepts?
